Water Service Update: 7/19/24

Hello Neighbors,

I wanted to share a quick update on our water system before the weekend. We’ve been experiencing water issues for the last several weeks due to a confluence of circumstances, but have been working hard to address the problems.

Last week’s filter rebuild was a success and the Water Treatment Plant is running well.

Additionally, a hard flush of the entire system was completed last night. This is intended to pull the fresh water from the plant through the system to rid it of sediment and organic matter that causes discoloration. We are seeing improvements throughout the system, but some issues may persist.

For that reason, our crews are out today performing some spot flushing on Schoharie Tpke. This may continue into next week. While flushing is underway, you may experience a drop in water pressure and/or discoloration/odor in your water. While the water is aesthetically unpleasing, it is not unsafe. The water is testing fine and all is looking good at the plant. Organic matter and sediment build-up in the lines will cause the discoloration we are seeing.

The contractor who performed the filter rebuild suggested that we have our two clear wells professionally cleaned now that the second filter is back up and running. You may remember that we had our two larger tanks cleaned last year, today, I signed emergency approval to have this work done ASAP. We are scheduled for Tuesday, July 23rd.

We are also still experiencing drought conditions which contribute to aesthetic issues with the water.

And we are awaiting a permit from DEC to perform vegetation maintenance at the reservoir. We will get started on that as soon as we have approval. This has not been performed in quite some time and should help alleviate some of our issues.

We are sill on track for the WTP control systems upgrade for which we have been awarded NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation funding. The process is taking far longer than I’d like, but in order to have it funded, we have to follow a particular protocol.

Please continue to report issues to us through the Village Clerk’s office. These reports help us figure things out faster.

I am a water user too and have seen issues at my home as well. I apologize for the inconvenience, but please know that the Village staff and I are doing everything we can to mitigate the problems and keep folks informed. Please subscribe to this newsfeed if you haven’t already.

Thank you,
Amy
