I hope everyone is drying out and starting to get back to normal after this most recent storm. The rainfall was far more than what had been predicted. In one day we had nearly three times the amount of rain that fell in the entire month of November.
I’d like to thank our first responders for their hard work yesterday. Our volunteer firefighters, public works crew and police were out in the thick of things assisting residents throughout the entire event and I am incredibly grateful.
Unfortunately, December floods seem to be becoming the new normal in the village. We’ve seen wet Christmases rather than white ones for the last three years.
One way residents can help themselves, their neighbors and the village to prepare for these events and (hopefully) mitigate flooding is to make sure the drains or catch basins near your home are clear of debris. Build up of leaves, dirt or other items interferes with the proper functioning of these drainage systems.
This likely won’t keep everyone’s home dry, but it can help.
This summer I worked with Greene County on our piece of its updated hazard mitigation plan and flooding was the top concern, not just for us, but for all the river communities. These events will occur more frequently, so as we make improvements to infrastructure within the village we will remain mindful of the potential for rising waters.
